This video from Flutter Health explains some of the most common symptoms of endometriosis, as well as the process required to reach a diagnosis. According to the narrator, an estimated five million women in the U.S. suffer from endometriosis, many of whom had to wait years for an accurate diagnosis.

The main symptom of endometriosis is pelvic pain, usually around the time of a woman’s period. However, pain can occur at any time during a woman’s menstrual cycle. Other symptoms include pain when having sex, pain when visiting the bathroom, heavy periods, and infertility.
Women need to speak to their doctor if they are experiencing symptoms of endometriosis. The doctor will review the patient’s full medical history, discuss their period and may perform a pelvic exam before ordering more tests. There is no cure for endometriosis but women can take medications to help with pain relief and have surgery to remove lesions.
