Although diet can’t cure endometriosis, changing it can help relieve some of the symptoms associated with the disease and improve patients’ quality of life.

Some researchers believe that women exposed to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are more at risk of developing endometriosis. These organochlorines can impact the immune system leading to the onset of various diseases including endometriosis. Endometriosis is a disease that’s fueled by estrogen, and since PCBs mimic estrogen in the body, they can exacerbate symptoms.

Eliminating foods which might contain PCBs could help women who have endometriosis better manage the symptoms and slow down the progression of the disease. According to obgyn.net, women should avoid consuming PCBs by limiting their consumption of red meats, fatty foods, oily fish, certain dairy products, alcohol and caffeine.

Women are advised to eat low-fat white meat, organic vegetables and fruit, and peel any non-organic fresh produce they consume. Eating a rainbow of colors when it comes to fruit and vegetables will ensure patients get plenty of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.  Adding nuts, seeds and whole grains to meals will increase fiber intake, helping to eliminate waste and toxins, as will drinking the appropriate amount of water each day.
